MMA combines the striking styles of Thai Boxing and Western Boxing, with the takedowns and clinch work of Greco Roman and Wrestling and the ground work of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Made popular by the famous Ultimate Fighting Championship tournaments in the USA, MMA is now the most rapidly growing combat sport in the world.
Why train in MMA? A person trained in MMA is well prepared for combat against martial artists from all disciplines, whether this be in self defence or competition fighting. Classes are high intensity, providing an excellent workout for those wanting to improve their fitness. Several Fightworx members have fought in MMA at various levels (Amatuer to Pro) so you will be in the company of experienced fighters who have proven their skills in the cage.
What to expect
A typical MMA class at Fightworx will include:
· Warm up and conditioning exercises · Pad work using focus mitts and kick shields · Ground/ Grappling techniques such as take downs, positional dominance on the ground · Submissions, such as joint locks and chokeholds · Sparring (please note that you will not be expected to join in with sparring until you feel comfortable to do so, and have the necessary protective equipment).
If you have no prior experience of martial arts it is recommended that you first do some training in our BJJ and boxing classes (Thai boxing or Chickboxing). In these classes you will quickly pick up the basics of ground work and stand up fighting which will give you a head start for MMA training. If you would rather jump straight into MMA that is fine also, with classes open to all abilities.
Classes Mondays 8.00-9.00pm and Saturdays 11.00-12.00pm
